This was an idea I got from a recipe by Anni Daulter from her cookbook called, “The Organic Family Cookbook”. She recommends an actual gratitude jar when you get invited to her dinner of roasted chicken with dark chocolate dipping sauce. Think of the movie, “Chocolat”, with Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp, where the birthday dinner party eats chicken with chocolate. I have always wondered what that would taste like. It is as rich and wonderful as you might imagine.
But that chicken and chocolate dinner was my idea. And since I do all the cooking in our family, it was kind of like asking for compliments, or even demanding them.
We have elevated the traditional Swiss creation to a whole new level. We like to challenge each other to see who can come up with the best “taste sensation”. It is only fitting that my daughter won the prize tonight – nachos.
She disappeared into the kitchen and came back to the table with a handful of taco chips. Crushed slightly into her tray with some cheese and toppings. I don’t know if I have ever been more proud of her.
So I guess, over the course of this week, I have learned gratitude. I don’t need to write it down on a note paper and slip into a jar to remember later. I lived the lesson of not having enough appreciation, and then understanding what it feels like to be full.

- chorizo, my daughter dips that in honey
- caramelized onions
- sliced mushrooms
- roasted baby potatoes, sliced
- pickled, sliced, garlic scrapes
- roasted garlic
- sweet gherkins
- organic, local beef
- crumbled gorgonzola
- and the taco chips…
