Creating a life you love

It is funny how certain things can touch your heart. A ray of light coming through the window. A string of lyrics in a song, haunting and comforting at the same time. A story you hear from a friend, tears springing to your eyes before you even finished hearing it. A funny line of text in an email makes you burst out laughing.

These are the moments I live for. They are tender and true. Not always joyful, but they are real. They make me feel alive. Because we must experience the low to know the joy of the high. I’ve always lived this way. Sometimes it is a tough way to be. Soaring high and then miserably down in the dumps. I feel it all.

I had a particularly rough, low point recently. It was when I was far from home. This song really spoke to me. Why is it, we only realize the value of what we have, when we don’t have it?

“Let Her Go” by Passenger

Well you only need the light when it’s burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go

Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low
Only hate the road when you’re missin’ home
Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go  —

Staring at the bottom of your glass
Hoping one day you’ll make a dream last
But dreams come slow and they go so fast

You see her when you close your eyes
Maybe one day you’ll understand why
Everything you touch surely dies

Staring at the ceiling in the dark
Same old empty feeling in your heart
‘Cause love comes slow and it goes so fast

Well you see her when you fall asleep
But never to touch and never to keep
‘Cause you loved her too much
And you dived too deep

I returned home and everything goes back to normal, right? Well no. It was a pretty profound experience. I had to reach out to those around me, gather my supporters and make sure they knew how grateful I was to have them in my life. That felt great to do. For connection is what having a good life is all about.

Then turning my thoughts to “life”, I stumbled across a 12 month course starting in January. (I just love it when these things start at the beginning of the year, I really do, not sarcastic.) While I am halfway through rubbing sand between my toes and soaking in the sun – I’ll start this journey. If you should feel inclined, check it out – LIVE. Creating a life you love.

It is somewhat serendipitous how these events weave together. But I like it.
